Vogtlandbahn E183 series |
An remarkbale member of the ES64U4 family. Unlike most other members, the four machines delivered to the German Vogtlandbahnen, are technically configured for service under 15kV and 25kV AC voltage systems and certified for service in Germany and Austria only. You could say that these machines are successors of the ES 64 U2 platform, which Siemens has been building up to 2006. It shows the flexibility of the latest platform.
In October 2009, Arriva/VGB recieved a fifth unit, designated 183 005. Quick delivery was possible as Siemens had a batch of six ES 64 U4's in stock at that time.

 The ODEG services with CityShuttle coaches and the Metronom-rake on the RE4 line have ended. No exotic combinations with colorful locomotives anymore, but the long awaitd KISS trains (ET 445.102, 109, 110 und 111). Arriva 183 004 is back in the South of Germany. - DSO

Earlier this year, public transport operator Arriva was taken over by the Deutsche Bahn. However, for the German part, Arriva Deutschland, an different owner had to be found; Trenitalia and investor Cube from Luxembourg. They renamed it as FS Netinera.
Logically, Arriva now wants all Arriva-logos being removed from FS Netinera rolling stock; For example the locomotives used for the Alex services in Southern Germany. Many on the 223s and 183s have disappeared. But than there is the 183 001 with its special Adler-livery. For this unit a custom-made has been found: click

This month, Alex (Arriva-Länderbahn-Express) will extend its services in Southern Germany. For this extra rolling stocki is needed. Next to for example new double stock coaches, also three new locomotives will be added to the fleet: In the first week of October unit 223 072 previously assigned to Regentalbahn Cargo, was rebranded, since then available for passenger services. In the first week of November, Siemens in Linz delivered an additional EuroSprinter electric for Alex: 183 005. Since this week another EuroRunner joined; ER 20-008 hired from MRCE Dispolok. - KAR

These four machines were taken from the ongoing production of 1216 series locomotives in Linz and delivered in the last month of 2007 to the Vogtlandbahnen, subsidiary of Arriva. Together with 11 EuroRunner diesel-electrics, leased from Angel Trains, they secure passenger services in Southern Germany, from Munchen to Oberstdorf and Lindau, from Munchen to Regensburg, and from Furth-im-Wald to Hof. Arriva was awarded with this 10-year-contract for these relations back in 2005. Brand name for the network is ‘Alex’, an abbreviation of Arriva-Länderbahn-Express. Arriva started regular services in December 2007, taking over from the Länderbahn and SBB GmbH combination, which already exploited the same relations under the product name Allgau Express, also ‘Alex’ in short.
The four E183 series locomotives are used for the Munchen-Regensburg service. Like all other new or refurbished ‘Alex’ stock, they are painted in a distinctive turquoise livery, in combination with white and yellow. The designation ‘183’ is a logical choice as its two-tension predecessors are known as 182 series in the German numbering system.
The new ‘Alex’ trains have become a popular subject for railway photographers, as passenger trains hauled by locomotives slowly turn into a curiosity, as the majority of the operators nowadays choose for train sets to exploit renewed services. The ‘Alex’ is also appreciated by the real railway travelling purists. Refurbished, but classic coaches, still with compartments in the first class, and even a fully fledged bar, nicknamed ‘alex-treff’, on board.
The four E183s came from the same production line as the OBB 1216 series locomotives in Linz.

When regarding the inscriptions on all four machines, one notices some differences. E183 001 and 002 were deliverd with complete Arriva logos up front and service numbers placed on top of these, a little to the right. E183 003 and 004 only have the name Arriva up front and there service numbers are placed underneath these names, right in the middle. Reason for this is unknown. All four machines carry the Arriva name and logo on side one, the Vogtlandbahn logo and the name 'Alex' one side two. |
