standard configurations
the DACH configuration
Of course, the customer always decides how their products will be configured, but during the past years Bombardier was able to optimalise locomotives for services in a certain combination of countries (Next to the basis configuration for Germany and Austria). Many operators therefore often choose proven concepts, resulting a several standard configurations for Traxx2 AC2 locomotives.
The DACH configuration was first introduced for the DB Schenker 185.1 series (Traxx1 AC1), but now also a popular version for its successor, Traxx 2 AC2. Although their service domain only include countries with 15kV AC voltage systems, these machines do need 4 pantographs; for running in Switzerland extra pantographs are needed with small 1450 mm wide contacts, which are prescribed for running in the numerous Swiss tunnels. Bombardier customers that have ordered DACH configured machines are Angel Trains Cargo, CBRail, MRCE Dispolok and Allco.
the Scandinavia configuration
In 2007 Hector Rail, open access operator from Sweden, announced that it had signed a contract with a customer for a direct service from Sweden to Germany vv. For these services Traxx2 F140AC2 were ordered and retrofitted, setting a trend that now has resulted in Traxx locomotives taking over in Scandinavia. Soon after Hector Rail placed its order, also DB Schenker decided to retrofit 17 of its 185.2 series machines with the Scandinavia package.
Hector Rail and DB Schenker got their machines homologated for Germany, Denmark en Sweden only, but at the end of 2007, lease company Angel Trains Cargo extended to service domain of this configuration by placing an order for machines that could additionally run in Norway.
the future: Hungary and Luxembourg/France (?)
In 2008, the service domain of Traxx2 AC2 electrics will be extended with Hungary for sure. Eurocom and Angel Trains Cargo both will operate machines in this country. Then Luxembourg and the north of France are the two remaining parts of Western Europe where possibly the AC2s in the near future could do their job. Lets see if this will happen.
