Alpha Trains / RBSAF 185.2
in short
orders
Alpha Trains was formerly known as Angel Trains Cargo. The new name was introduced on 01.01.2010.

Angel Trains is a rolling stock leasing company formed after the privatisation of the UK railway system. It founded a subsidiary, Angel Trains Cargo, serving the continental European market for freight locomotives. Many units property of ATC/Alpha Trains were delivered in the standard ATC livery: turquoise and green: 185 575-577, 607-616, 617-619, 633 and 634. Standard these units were equipped for running in Germany and Austria only.

185 607-616 were additionally equipped for services in Hungary. After being built in Kassel, they were transported to the Bombardier site in Dunakeszi, Hunagry, where the local signalling system was installed, EVM120. Then they came back to Germany, waiting for further orders.

185 610 and 611 have a curious history. Although they had the ATC delivery during completion, and they went to Hungary for modification, they were never delivered as such to ATC. In May 2009 they were sold to Railpool and hired to the EVB from Germany. They now run as 185 672 and 673, painted in grey and blue.

7 locomotives, designated 185 603-606 and 630-632 are leased to the HGK and are painted red. They can be used in Germany and Austria.

A batch of ten was built for Norwegian freight operator CargoNet (185 620-629), with the D/A+S/N package. They run in Norway and Sweden and Norwegian style service numbers: EL19 001-010.

Angel Trains Cargo has a long-term contract with Bombardier for the delivery of hundreds of Traxx machines. As soon as the market asks for it, ATC can ask Bombardier to built a selection of the machines form this contract. Delivery of Traxx F140 AC2 machines therefore happens gradually:

Since December 2010, DB Regio hired six TRAXX AC2 locomotives from Alpha Trains for S-Bahn services in and around Nürnberg (185 616-619 and 633-634). An temporary solution, as long as the Bombardier Talent2 train sets were not approved and homologated.

One and a half year later, Talent2 is ready to roll. The 185.2s had their last day of revenue service on 31.05.2012. Today they will go to Krefeld. - AH/MM Alpha Trains / RBSAF 185.2

[NO] CargoNet 119.003 coming back to Germany / leasing contract with Alpha Trains not extended [edited]
CargoNet from Norway has decided not to extend the rental contract of three of its Traxx locomotives: 119 001, 119 002 and 119 003. [edit] For 119.001 and 002 a new employer needs to be found. Unit 119 003 is severely damaged and is sent back to Germany. Possibly, CargoNet will hire EL18 units instead.

The 001 and 002 will go south bound the regular way, in a freight train. But 003 has to travel over the road. Since its delivery, the 003 has suffered from various accidents. In January 2012, the engine was finally knocked out, after its derailment in Dombås station.

So, yesterday, 119 003 was loaded onto a heavy duty truck. Today, the transport should have been embarked the Oslo - Kiel, hopefully arriving in Kiel tomorrow. Its final destination should be the DB Dessau works. - MO/DSO/Jernbane.net/medlem.njk.no

Railcolor: CargoNet 119.001, 002 and 003 are three of ten Traxx AC2 locomotives, hired from Alpha Trains. In the fleet of the leasing company they have service number 185 620, 621 and 622. With the Traxx units, Bombardier is learning a hard lesson in the severe environmental conditions in Northern Scandinavia, which prove not to be the most ideal environment for their standard platform locomotive. However, one can learn from experience. Alpha Trains / RBSAF 185.2

[DE] time table changes
As of today, many European countries have new timetables. In Germany this has some consequences for modern electrics:

DB Schenker temporarily hires nine 145 series locomotives to DB Regio, to secure the S1 cityservice around Dresden (Meißen-Dresden-Schöna). They replace 143 series engines that have a top speed of only 120 kph. The 145s will be used until there are more 182 series locomotives, coming from DB Schenker, with an approved package for passenger services.

182 013-016 have been sold by DB Schenker to DB Regio per 07.12.2010. So there are sixteen engines by DB Regio now.

Green and silver Traxx units help out in Nürnberg. There DB Regio hires 185 616-619 and 633-634 to haul trains on the extended S-Bahn network. The Traxx units will run on the S3 line between Neumarkt and Nürnberg. In 2007 DB Regio ordered Talent2 trainsets by Bombardier for this network, but they are not available yet.

There some more information in the mean time. We can expect most of the units back in service by the end of the year, as the demand for lease locomotives is growing. 185 608 is the first one that has found its first employer, LTE from Austria. Remarkable is that the 'halter' of the 608 is Royal Back of Scotland Asset Finance (D-RBSAF) and not Alpha Trains (D-ATLD) as expected. Something has changed here. We will get back on this. ...standing in Padborg. Thanks to Klippekort. The UIC grid on the side of the machine shows us a curious combination of countries for which these locomotives will be homologated: Sweden, Norway, Germany and Austria. This was an explicit wish of Angel Trains. When the machines will not be used (anymore) in Norway or Sweden, they can easily be rented out to customers active in the other two countries, an important market as we all know. As Denmark fails, these machines will not be used for long-haul services from Scandinavia to Germany, as sometimes was suggested. It also results in a new configuration type of the Traxx AC2, so that 185 620 will have to perform additional tests in Sweden, which will be executed by HectorRail. - DSO Alpha Trains / RBSAF 185.2

As you already know, Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln AG (HGK) has fourteen Traxx F140 AC2 locomotives on delivery. The seven machines leased from CB Rail are now in service (designated 185 582/584-589). The batch of seven that will be leased from ATC is cut in two. 185 603-606 are being completed right now, the latter three will come later. They will be numbered 185 630-632. The next F140 AC2 to come from kassel is 185 607, a locomotive for ATC in the normal green and silver paintscheme. It has two pantographs. - DSO/KAR Alpha Trains / RBSAF 185.2

[EU] Angel Trains Cargo sold
The news is already two weeks old, but still interesting. The Royal Bank of Scotland, urgently needing fresh capital, has sold Angel Trains Cargo, to a consortium of investors for £3.6 bn. This consortium includes the Babcock & Brown European Infrastructure Fund, Australian investment manager AMP Capital Investors, Deutsche Bank and pension funds advised by Access Capital Advisers. Note that Babcock & Brown is already active on the European leasing market for railway vehicles, as it also owns CB Rail. This company is a joint venture of B&B and the English HBOS. It is expected that the Angel Trains transaction will be completed by the end of 2008. - Railwaygazette Alpha Trains / RBSAF 185.2 Alpha Trains 185.1 Alpha Trains 223 Alpha Trains E483 Alpha Trains 186

[NO] CargoNet signs a three-year deal with Angel Trains Cargo
Today, operator CargoNet AS (55% propert of the Norwegian federal railways and 45% property of Greencargo from Sweden) signed a three year deal with Angel Trains Cargo for leasing 10 Bombardier Traxx locomotives. It would be most logical that this deal concerns Traxx F140AC2 type electrics. Clear is that these machines are taken out of the order for MS, DC and AC2 locomotives placed by Angel Trains on 24.09.2007, making a short term delivery possible; all locomotives will be handed over at the end of the year, then starting services in Norway and Sweden in January 2009. - Lok-Report/RIRF Alpha Trains / RBSAF 185.2

[DE] 14 electrics for the HGK, the details
Clearly, regular visitors have seen the pictures of brand new Traxx electrics for the Häfen- und Güterverkehr Köln AG, that have been delivered in March in April. Also, in the news one could already read that the HGK finally would plan up to 14 machines, which is now confirmed. The first seven machines are leased from CB Rail, the next seven will be property of Angel Trains Cargo. As far as I know these machines are not part of any CB or ATC orders that have been published so far, but specially built for the HGK.

The HGK will get 14 red painted Traxx 2 F140AC2's. The CB Rail locomotives are numbered 185 582, 584-589. Of the ATC machines, the first two are now waiting for assembly in Kassel, and are numbered 185 603 and 604. All 14 machines will be homologated for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. - H Alpha Trains / RBSAF 185.2 CBRail 185.2
