[IT/AT] the start of MiCoTra; connecting Udine and Villach
With a delay of six months, Italian open access operator FUC and the Austrian national railways (ÖBB) have started their new MiCoTra-service connecting Udine (IT) and Villach (AT). FUC and ÖBB offer four daily services, being supported by EU funding.
MiCoTra is short for 'MIglioramento dei COllegamenti TRAnsfrontalieri', meaning 'improving border crossing connections'. It's a new initiative, very welcome in the border region of Austria and Italy, since Trenitalia decided to withdraw most of its international services. FUC provides traction with both its 190 series locomotives, the coaches are property of ÖBB. MiCoTra is an experiment with a duration of one year.
