The Trenitalia E464 series is the biggest locomotive series in Europe of modern time. No less than 688 units have been ordered, of these small single cab passenger locomotives.
The E464 series is built by the Bombardier assembly plant in Vado Ligure (IT) since 1999. These machines are specifically developed for fast (sub)urban and regional passenger services. An overview of all orders:

Today, Bombardier in Vado Ligure will deliver the very last E464 locomotive to Trenitalia: E464 688. An era comes to and end, the production of this type started 14 years ago, in 1999.
Bombardier has built a staggering 699 units of this type. E464 001-688 for Trenitalia, ten machines for FER and one for TFT.

Since 1999, Bombardier is building the E464 series for Trenitalia. These economic single cab locomotives have become a common sight throughout Italy these days. In total, 688 units have been ordered. After a production period of more than twelve years, Bombardier is now working on the last batch of fifty units, ordered in 2011. Next year, the production will end. On 06.04.2012 Railcolor could inspect the production line; At that moment, E464 650 to 655 were there, in various stages of assembly. Outside the factory, unit E464 640 was ready for delivery. There have been some outings on the fact that the number of E464s on order could be reduced, as a result of the economical situation Italy is currently in. But Bombardier states production so far has not been reduced. - Bombardier

Trenitalia has again raised it order volume for the single cab Traxx DCP: +50 making a total of 688 units. Delivery will take place in 2012 and 2013. More in the official press release.

Some nice things to know about the Trenitalia E464 series, just to fill the vacuum between Christmas and new years eve:
Trenitalia has introduced a new livery for its Leonardo Express, the shuttle service from Rome to Fiumicino airport. Rolling stock used, being blue and yellow painted E464 electrics and push-pull rakes, are being refurbished in Trenitalia green, combined with red and white (scroll down a bit), adding just a tiny bit more style to it.
Next to that, we can celebrate E464 series' 10th anniversary, as first units were spotted on 20.12.1999; Ferrovie.it has a nice little report on it, including an overview of all the liveries used. The Railcolor.net Version 1 website had s small section about these engines, but there has been no time up till now to transfer the info to this website.
This year Trenitalia also decided to order another hundred E464 units, bringing the total on 638 units, a remarkable large batch in these modern times. Work in the Bombardier Vado Ligure factory is now secured until 2012. Production is currently approaching unit number 500. And finally, enjoy the specially painted Quattroseiquattro once more.

Bombardier has been awarded with a supplemental order for 100 Traxx P160DCP electrics, including an option for 50 more units. Since 1999, the Bombardier assembly plant in Vado Ligure (IT) is building such locomotives, better known as Trenitalia class E464. These machines are specifically developed for fast (sub)urban and regional passenger services.
We are not completely sure, but unlike what is stated in most press-items about this news (they state Trenitalia already had 638 units on order), we think (and correct us if we are wrong..) this order raises the number of E464s to be delivered to Trenitalia to an impressive 638 units. An overview:

On 14.06.1999, trails with prototype locomotive E464.000 started at the test tracks of Velim in Cerhenice (CZ). Test were performed using a measurement car with a veru classic look, three service cars carrying spare parts and CD locomotive 151.018. - EK 10/1999

On 07.04.1999, the prototype locomotive for the new E464 series for the Italian state railways (FS) was outshopped. The prototype, that is generally known as E464.000, is completely painted except for its cab fronts. The bodies of the first locomotives have been built by SLM in Winterthur (CH). The body for unit no.000 came to Italy by road transport in January 1999. - EK 06/1999:

Standard livery XMPR: For the majority of the E464 series locomotives, the livery is almost the same, based on the colors combination studied by english company XMPR for Trenitalia in 1994; Pantone 2CV Cool Gray for the almost white base, with a good quantity of Pantone 329CV green, and a Pantone 293CV blue stripe. There have been only minor modifications to the livery during the delivery of the the various orders (mostly replacing of numbers, introduction of NVR numbers). And the first batch had a different red surface between the buffers. However, the basic E464 livery is almost the same in all its 14 years of production, from 1999 to 2013. E 464 050: |
Leonardo Express 1: Specific livery for first class only shuttle service between Rome and Fiumicino Airport, with 5 UIC-X renewed cars. The service started in 2006. Applied on E464.001, 002, 003, 004, 005.

| TiLo: Specific livery designed in 2004 at the foundation of the "TiLo" partnership between Trenitalia and SBB-CFF-FFS for the services between Lombardia (Italy) and Ticino (Switzerland). The compositions with E464 and a variable number of low-deck Trenitalia coaches have been pretty soon replaced with modern Staedler "Flirt" EMUs. Applied on E464.189, 190, 191, 192, 193, 194, 195, 196, 197, 198.

 Trenord: New livery studied for all the trains of the new company "Trenord", founded in 2011 by Trenitalia and LeNord for the regional train service in Lombardia.
