We had to wait for more than four years, but on 24 July 2008 the big day was there: the new Skoda 109E locomotive had its official roll-out. In Pilsen the blue and silver painted locomotive was presented for the international press that day. With the completion of the machine a whole new era has started for Skoda, presenting its first new electric locomotive development in fifteen years. With the 109E Skoda enters the third millennium with a product that has international ambitions and which does meet all the latest European standards. It is flexible and modular, has a top speed of 200 kph and is compatible with both AC and DC catenaries; basic characteristics of a multisystem locomotive nowadays.
The development of the 109E was initiated after the Czech national railways (CD) awarded Skoda with an order for 20 multisystem electrics in May 2004. The CD already started a first tender for new electrics back in 2002, but a second tender was needed, supported by European funds, to make it possible for the CD to really place an order. The CD plans on using their new locomotives, the designated CD 380 series, for passenger services on main corridors in their home country. Additionally, the CD plans on homologating the 380 series for Austria, Germany, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.
initial exterior design of the Skoda 109E
Very soon the first design impressions leaked, giving the world an idea how the exterior design of the 109E would be. What we saw was a very futuristic looking silver machine with a rounded cabs and side grids with diagonal lining. Porsche Design was responsible for this design, which immediately gave a face easy to recognize to the new and ambitious plans of Skoda.
revisited exterior design, meeting the EN15227 impact resistance standards
After that, the long and difficult phase started of making a feasible locomotive, able to fulfill its purpose, without loosing the original identity of the design. This process took around two years. In 2006 the final design was presented with a 1:20 scale model on the Innotrans 2006 international railway fair in Berlin. In December that year also a first body of the 1:1 scale version was ready for static testing. It was immediately clear that the looks of the 109E had changed drastically in the mean time.
the first complete body of a 109E is transported to for fatique tests at the end of 2006
Especially the construction of the cabins of the machine had to go through a long process of redesign to meet all the latest regulations concerning driver safety (e.g. fire resistance) and crash impact (deformation zones and energy absorption). Skoda states that the construction of the 109E corresponds to the specific characteristics of the Central European rail infrastructure. The 109E can deal with small curves and minimizes wear on the tracks. Last but not least, the 109E is prepared for installing ECTS, the European standard on board safety and signalling system.

Železniční magazín brings a short message about the Skoda 109E / CD 380 series locomotives that have been used for homologation purposes in the past years. They get software upgrades and will slowly enter regular service. Curious is the constructional change on locomotive 380 001. Above its buffers, it got two extra metal strips.

[CZ] 380 009 and 013 now dedicated to new D1 Express
The title says it all. These two machines are currently the dedicated locomotives for the new D1 express train in the Czech Republic. Like the locomotives, all coaches have D1 Express logos.
The D1 story is good marketing and we go along. Picture this: Connect the two biggest cities in your country with an hourly train service. The D1 only adds two extra one way connections in the morning and two for the way home in afternoon.
BTW, D1 is the designation of highway number 1 in the Czech Republic. Due to its bad condition, it will be reconstructed soon. The D1 Express offers an alternative to car owners that are facing traffic jams due to the reconstruction. - JP

[CZ] D1 Express is coming [updated]
A new job for the CD class 380 locomotives. Starting at October 4th, 2012, the Czech Railways will operate the new D1 Express service connecting Prague and Brno. This new train will complement existing services on this route, but will be non-stop. A five car train will run twice a day in each direction offering extra service aboard (wifi, food and beverages, electric outlets etc.) and connecting both cities in 2 hours and 42 minutes. More information here.
On this route, CD is successfully competing with the road. Rising demand inspired the company to introduce additional train services. They will be hauled by CD 380 class locomotives, starting at a speed op 140 kph max. In December it is planned to speed up to 160. That will make the service seven minutes faster. - MF

[CZ] CD 380 011 - Vlakem na Euro -
Today, ČD 380 011-7 has its first day of revenue service in its new 'Vlakem na Euro' livery. It will leave from Prague, bound for Ostrava. It will not enter the country where Euro2012 takes place today. The 380 011 will turn in Bohumin, close to the Czech-Polish border.
The Czech national football team plays all matches in the group phase in Wroclaw (on the 08th, 12th and 16th of June). The Czech railways therefore plan special charter trains from Prague to this Polish city. Next to the 380 011, also a 163 series locomotive will get the special livery. This locomotive can be used for border crossing services.
According to Gazeta Wyborcza, the Czech national football team will travel to Poland by train. They will leave on 03.06.2012. The 380 011 will be exhibited at the Czech Railday on 19-21.06.2012. - rynek-kolejowy.pl/ JP / JS

[AT/CZ] impounded CD 380 004 free again [update]
380 004 was impounded in Austria on 22.05.2011. It became subject if a legal dispute between Skoda and Bombardier. In 2002 both manufacturers closed an agreement on building locomotives for Eastern Europe together. However, Skoda terminated the contract unilaterally, says Bombardier. Seizing the 380 004 should have increased the pressure.
Now, unit 380 004 is on the run again. It was stored at Wien-Inzersdorf, inside the work shop of the Wiener Lokalbahnen. On 05.11.2011, the locomotive was seen in Vienna.
Update: On 07.11.2011, the 004 was still in Vienna and currently parked on one of the last track left of the old depot Wien-Süd. The reason is that a document which shows the good running-condition of the vehicle (German: Lauffähigkeitsbescheinigung) is still missing. Rail Cargo Austria has to wait for that to be able tow it (with a regular goods train, as the Czech Railways wishes) to Breclav.
Update 2: On 11.11.2011, the 004 was seen on transport back to CZ.

[DE] Skoda 109E in Germany, Austria and Switserland
During the past months, the Skoda 109E (or Skoda 380 series) is tested extensively both in Austria and Germany. 380 019 was also seen in Based, Switserland. We bring you some impressions of 380 006, 017 and 019 which were involved in trials. The most important milestones of the 109E testing/delivery program up til now:
- 380 004 was impounded in Austria on 22.05.2011. It became subject if a legal dispute between Skoda and Bombardier. In 2002 both manufacturers closed an agreement on building locomotives for Eastern Europe together. However, Skoda terminated the contract unilaterally, says Bombardier. The German-Canadian manufacturer already had shared important knowledge and technical drawings on how to built a modern multi-system electric locomotives. They now want a one million euro refund for this. Seizing the 380 004 should increase the pressure.
- The 380 004 was replaced by 380 019, that then completed 200 kph trials in the Austrian westbahn (ATP LZB testing).
- On 29.06.2011, the 380 019 was the first 109E to haul a commercial freight train to Vienna.
- 380 020 was the last unit of the CD order to be completed. It arrived at Velim test center in the Czech Republic on 03.08.2011.
- 380 006, 017 and 018 (two of them are in the images) were then used for trials in Germany, starting in May 2011.
