22.10.2008: SNCF Fret has awarded Bombardier with an order for 30 Traxx diesel-electric locomotives; total volume 293 million Euro. They have also taken an option for another 50 units. SNCF Fret plans to use these machines for services towards the main ports of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.

On 05.12.2008, Bombardier released the final details about the order:
The transport and logistics branch of the French Railways, Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français (SNCF) has confirmed a contract with Bombardier Transportation to supply 80 interoperable diesel electric BOMBARDIER TRAXX F140 DE locomotives, with an initial firm order of 45 locomotives. The value of this firm order is estimated at approximately 160 million euros ($203 million US). The first delivery is scheduled for May 2010. Serie designation will be BB 76000 with prefix 4 for SNCF Fret.

At the end of 2008, SNCF founded a new subsidiary for locomotive leasing; Akiem. The company was first present on the Transport Messe in Munich in May 2009. SNCF locomotives that are underutilised will become available for lease via Akiem. One can think of modern Prima electrics and diesel-electrics, but also a part of the fleet of 80 Traxx locomotives which will be delivered by Bombardier from 2010. In the beginning, 233 locomotives worth EUR 430 Million will be transferred. Their number will increase to 400 by 2013. - SNCF |

We already reported several times about Traxx DE locomotives, in the livery of Akiem, performing trials in Belgium and the Netherlands. The test runs of last week were transition tests between the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Three units were used for these trials:
76 101 (DE/BE/NL) ran between Montzen (BE) and Aachen West (DE).
76 002 (FR/BE/NL) was tested on Visé (BE) – Maastricht (NL).
76 102 (DE/BE/NL) between Oldenzaal (NL) and Bad Bentheim (DE).
76 102 (DE/BE/NL) on the BetuweRoute (NL with ETCS) starting in Emmerich (DE). [edit]

For the second time, Traxx DE locomotives are in Belgium and the Netherlands. Dynamic trials were already performed in 2009 and 2010, but were cancelled before completion. SNCF, the company that originally wanted such locomotives for services in Germany, Belgium, France and the Netherlands, has been re-negotiating their order ever since. The first weeks of 2013 seem to be a fresh (re)start for the diesel engines, that are nowadays sporting the silver livery of Akiem, the leasing company of SNCF/Geodis. And fresh it is.
Unit 76 102 is on the BetuweRoute in NL, as we showed yesterday. Unit 76 002 and 76 101 arrived in Belgium on 11.01.2013. On 15. and 16.01.2013 both machines ran on the Athus-Meuse line from Lacuisine to Epioux vv. Track no.B was put out of order for the test train of Belgorail. The test train was a so called "rame encadrée" with a locomotive on either side of the composition. On the north side unit 76 002, towards the south NMBS/SNCB 1346 was up front. - MS

  Today, Rail Adventure 139 558-1 and ITL 285 104-6 brought a Diesel-Traxx for lease company Akiem to the Polish-German border. In Guben, the locomotive was taken over by Rail Polska. From there it continued its journey to the test center of Zmigrod (PL). - FG
Although never planned, Akiem seems to be interested in having its Traxx DE locomotives active in Poland. Bombardier will deliver 15 units for Akiem.

 An update on the SNCF/AKIEM plans with Traxx DE locomotives. Once there was the plan to order 80 locomotives. This resulted in a initial firm order for 45 Traxx DE units, placed at the end of 2008. With these machines, SNCF wanted to conquer the international freight corridors to the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. However, since then much has changed. A crisis. Take-overs. Market consolidation. Electrics have taken over.
Homologation trials with the first BB 76000s however did start in 2009 and 2010. No less than four prototypes were built for this purpose. But since the summer of 2010 it is silent.
In today's railways one can read now what the possible future plans with the BB 76000s will be. Most likely the order will be reduced to fifteen units, all to be delivered to AKIEM, the leasing department of the SNCF/Geodis group. Eleven of them are to be homologated for Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. The remaining four can run in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. All will be equipped with ETCS, so that services on the Dutch BetuweRoute are possible.
This is supported by the fact that a BB 76000, unit 76002, was recently present at the Munich Transport Logistic fair, in the livery of AKIEM. - Today's Railways

 Bombardier 076 101 has arrived in the Netherlands to start homologation trials. This unit is one of four locomotives Bombardier is using to get the Traxx diesels homologated for Germany, Blegium, the Netherlands and France. 076 101 is the only one painted in light grey, the other three (076 001, 002 and 102) have a green/white livery that is inspired by the SNCF Fret livery. These liveries however are just an idea of Bombardier and are not final nor official yet.

   Some snapshots from the Transport Messe in Munich last week. Most interesting was the DB announcing its purchase of 65 Traxx MS electrics. The exhibited E186 173 in ECR livery is from the first batch of 20 (E186 161-180) which belongs to this order. ECR, EuroCargoRail, is a subsidiary of DB Schenker Rail UK (former EWS). What the exact configuration of the remaining 45 machines will be and in which colours they will be painted, is unknown. In 2009, four different machines were built in Kassel to assist by the homologation of the SNCF/AKIEM BB 76000 series. Two machines of the BB 76000 sub serie for the SNCF, and two machines of the BB 76 100 sub serie for AKIEM, one of them beiing the former CBRail 285 110.
