DB Schenker EG 3100: general history  
Because of the opening of the new Øresund Belt link in 2000, offering a direct link between the Danish, German and Swedish rail networks, the Danish rail operator DSB decided to order thirteen very powerful locomotives. As the EG 3100 are also used in Germany and Sweden, they are bi-voltage machines, being able to run under 15 kV AC catenary additionally, and they are equipped with Swedish/Danich ATC and the German Indusi signalling systems. It was determined that the EG series had to be able to haul 2000 tonnes freight trains through the Great Belt link tunnel and over the bridge, with steap slopes up to 15,6 promilles. For these performances, four axles (almost standard nowadays) just would not suffice, resulting in the development of new three axled bogies. The continuous power rating was set on 6500 kW, the starting traction effort on 400 kN, and its top speed had to be a 140 kph, together a challenging concept for Siemens-KraussMaffei. As the EG 3100 series is not equipped with electrical train heating, they can not haul passenger trains.

DSB decided the place the order on August 22, 1997. The machines would be delivered in 1999-2000 to its independent freight division, DSB Gods.

The EG series are part of the ´EuroSprinter´ familiy, representing the second generation of this uniform platform, of which the DB 152 series more or the less can be regarded as the prototype. Proven components of this type therefore also found their place in the EG series including the shape of the exterior. Many different Siemens factories contributed to the development of the EG series. Traction and electronics parts are build by Siemens Verkehrstechnik. The bogies are built by Siemens Duewag in Krefeld-Uerdingen and Siemens SGP in Graz (Austria). Frames and bodies finally were constructed by Siemens Krauss-Maffei in München, were also final assembly took place. Originally it was planned to paint the locomotives completely red, but in 1998 DSB Gods presented it own style, resulting in a very artistic dark blue livery with blue and yellow details.

The roll-out of the first EG 3100 for DSB Gods took place in München on the August 3, 1999. Then a test program was started. EG 3100 locomotives ran on Siemens' test tracks of Wegberg-Wildenrath (Germany), Velim (near Celeznice in the Czech Republic) and in Germany (e.g. the Frankenwaldbahn for traction effort tests), Denmark and Sweden. On June 9, 2000, first EG 3100 was being used for a commercial service. On June 22, 2000, the first nonstop service from Padborg (German-Danish border) to Malmo (Sweden) was completed. Of course there were the usual starting problems but since the end of 2000 the EG 3101-3113 function very well.

In 2001 DSB Gods was taken over by the German logictics company Railion, and renamed Railion Denmark. In 2008 the company was renamed again as Railion Scandinavia. Except for the removal of the DSB Gods logos in 2001, this has not affected to appearance of the EG 3100 series so far.
